Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about chatting on StrangerMeet.
What is StrangerMeet?
StrangerMeet is a free, anonymous 1-on-1 random chat site. You get matched with a random stranger and can talk with text, voice notes, photos, and video — no account required.
Is StrangerMeet free?
Yes. Random chat, chat rooms, mini-games and everything you need to talk to strangers are free, with no account and no payment. There is also an optional paid upgrade called StrangerMeet Pro for people who want extras like ad-free browsing — but nothing you need is behind it.
Do I need an account?
No. You can open the site and start chatting straight away — no sign-up, no email, no password. Creating a free account is entirely optional and only exists so you can add friends and send direct messages, which need a way to recognise you again.
Is StrangerMeet anonymous?
Yes. You never need to share your real name or any personal details, and random chats are not tied to any identity. Even if you create an optional account, other people only ever see the nickname you choose — your email address is never shown to anyone, and your chats are still not linked to it.
How does random matching work?
Click "Start Chatting" and you’ll be connected with a random stranger who’s also online. Matching is random on both sides — neither of you chooses who you get paired with.
Can I skip someone?
Yes. "Next Stranger" ends the current chat and immediately starts matching you with someone new — no reason needed, no limit on how often you use it.
Can I use StrangerMeet on mobile?
Yes. StrangerMeet runs in your phone's browser — there's no app to download or install. The layout adapts to your screen automatically.
Can I use StrangerMeet without video?
Yes. Text chat works on its own — video, photos, and voice notes are optional. Media permissions (image, video, live camera, audio) default to off for both people and only turn on if each side explicitly allows it.
What are StrangerMeet chat rooms?
Rooms are group chats you can join without matching 1-on-1 — organized by country and by global/general topics, so you can talk with several people at once.
What is random group chat?
Random group chat matches you into a live conversation with several strangers at once, where you can share text, photos and voice notes. A group starts as soon as 3 people are ready, and more can join until it holds 10. When every group is full, newcomers wait until 3 of them are ready and a new group starts. Group messages go through the same automatic filters as the rest of the site, photos and voice notes from others stay hidden until you choose to show them, and like random chat nothing is ever stored. Start one on the group chat page.
How many people are in a group chat?
A group starts once 3 people are ready at the same time, and it can grow to a maximum of 10. While a group has space, new people join it straight away. When every group is full, newcomers wait until 3 of them are ready and a new group starts.
Can I send photos and voice notes in group chat?
Yes. You can share photos and voice notes of up to 60 seconds with the whole group. Photos and voice notes from other people stay hidden until you choose to show them, and like messages they are never stored. Someone who joins later cannot see anything shared before they arrived.
What is video chat on StrangerMeet?
Video chat pairs you with one random stranger on camera, with text and photos beside the call. It is free, needs no account, and nothing is recorded. The call is sent directly between the two browsers and encrypted end to end — it never passes through our servers, so there is no copy of it anywhere. Start one on the video chat page page.
Can other people see my IP address in a video call?
Usually yes. A video call connects your browser straight to theirs, which is what keeps it fast and clear, and a direct connection means each side can see the IP address of the other — the same as on most video-calling apps. An IP address roughly indicates a city and an internet provider; it is not your home address or your name. If the two connections cannot reach each other directly the call falls back to a relay, and in that case neither of you sees the other. We never store your IP address either way, and nobody along the way — including us — can see or hear inside the call. If that matters to you, random chat, group chat and rooms never connect you directly to anyone.
Is video chat moderated?
Not automatically, and we will not pretend otherwise: text on the site passes through an automatic filter, but no system watches a live camera, and because the call never reaches our servers there is nothing for us to scan. Moderation rests on reports. Every call has a Report button, reports feed the same ban system as the rest of the site, and enough reports bans the person. If you would rather not be shown a stranger's camera at all, random chat, group chat and rooms are text, photos and voice only.
Do I have to turn my camera on?
Yes. Video chat is camera-on for everyone: your browser asks permission first and you can refuse, but then you cannot join a call — use random chat, group chat or rooms instead if you would rather not be seen. There is deliberately no button to turn your camera off mid-call, because one person watching a queue of strangers while showing nothing is exactly what that button gets used for. Your microphone is yours: mute it whenever you like. Closing the page ends the call and releases the camera and microphone immediately.
What happens when people leave a group?
The group carries on as long as at least two people remain, and new people can join to fill the space. If you are the last one left, the group closes and you can start a new one with one tap.
Can I chat with people from different countries?
Yes. Country rooms let you join a room for a specific country, and global rooms bring together people from anywhere. Random 1-on-1 chat can also match you with someone from a different country.
How do I report someone?
Every chat has a Report button. Choose a category (such as bullying, threats, spam, or sexual content) and submit — reports are reviewed by our moderation system.
How does moderation work?
Messages are automatically screened for banned words, links, phone numbers, and attempts to share social media handles. Reports from multiple different people about the same user can trigger a ban.
Can users be banned?
Yes. Repeated reports from distinct users against the same person can result in a temporary ban, with longer bans for repeat violations. Serious violations can also result in a permanent ban.
What should I do if someone behaves badly?
End the chat — you don't owe anyone an explanation for leaving — then use the Report button to flag what happened. See our safety guide page.
What information should I avoid sharing?
Passwords, financial details, your home address, sensitive documents, and contact details for other platforms (sharing those is against the guidelines too). The safety guide covers this in more detail.
What does a free account give me?
Two things: you can add friends and send them direct messages. Signed-in members also show a small "Member" tag to the people they chat with. That is all it does — it is not required for chatting, and it does not change how matching works.
How do friend requests work?
When you are chatting with someone — either 1-on-1 or in a room — you can send them a friend request. They see your nickname, the details you chose to share, and a reminder of where you met, then accept or decline. Both people need a free account, because an anonymous visitor disappears the moment they close the tab and there would be nobody left to reach. A free account can send three friend requests a day, which keeps the feature from becoming a way to spam people. Once someone accepts, messaging them is unlimited.
Do direct messages disappear?
Yes. Every direct message is automatically deleted 24 hours after it is sent, including photos, camera snaps and voice notes. Your friends list stays — only the messages go. This is deliberate: the site is built around conversations that do not stick around.
Can anyone send me a direct message?
No. Only people you have accepted as friends can message you. A friend request has to be accepted first, and you can remove a friend at any time, which also deletes the conversation.
Can I save rooms I like?
Yes. Tap the heart on any room to favourite it, and it appears under the ♥ Favourites tab. It is free, works for both country and custom rooms, and needs no account — favourites are saved in your own browser.
Does Pro renew automatically, and can I get a refund?
Pro never renews automatically and there is no recurring charge. A subscription runs for the period you bought and then simply ends, so there is nothing to cancel — if you do not want it any more, you just do not buy it again. Purchases are final and are not refundable, except where the law of your country says otherwise.
What is StrangerMeet Pro?
An optional paid upgrade. It removes ads, adds filters so you can choose the country, gender and age range you are matched with, lets you create your own chat rooms with moderators, and shows a Verified badge to people you chat with. Pro costs $15 for 3 months and needs a free StrangerMeet account. You can pay in cryptocurrency through NOWPayments, which switches Pro on automatically once the payment is confirmed — or, if you do not have crypto, ask for another way to pay (such as PayPal, Payoneer, Wise, Skrill or a bank transfer) from the checkout and we will contact you.
What are the community guidelines?
Be respectful, no harassment, no explicit content, no spam, and no sharing of personal contact details. Read the full list on our Community Guidelines page.
Is StrangerMeet 18+?
Yes. StrangerMeet is strictly for adults 18 and older, and you must confirm your age before entering the site.
